The Prayer of Jabez, Revisited
Beyond the popular phrase: a sober look at boundary, blessing, and the cost of enlargement.
- 9Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, 'Because I bore him in pain.'
- 10And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!' So God granted him what he requested.

Jabez's prayer is famous, but the man behind it is often forgotten. He was named for pain and refused to be defined by it.
Enlargement is not a slogan — it is a stewardship. To ask for more territory is to ask for more responsibility, more warfare, and more dependence on the hand of God.
Notice the final petition: 'that I may not cause pain.' True enlargement is measured not only by what you gain but by what you do not break on the way up.
Application
- 01Examine the boundary lines of your current assignment. Are you being faithful where you stand before asking for more?
- 02Make a list of the territories — relational, vocational, spiritual — where you sense God expanding you.
- 03Pray for the hand of God to accompany the increase, not just the increase itself.
Prayer
Lord, bless me indeed. Enlarge the territory of my influence and let Your hand rest upon every step. Keep me from the evil that follows promotion, and let no one be wounded by my rise. In Jesus' name, amen.
