Matthew 8:5–13

The Faith of the Centurion

Authority recognizes authority. A meditation on submitted faith and the word that needs no proof.

  1. 5Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him,
  2. 6saying, 'Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.'
  3. 7And Jesus said to him, 'I will come and heal him.'
  4. 8The centurion answered and said, 'Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.'
  5. 9'For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, "Go," and he goes; and to another, "Come," and he comes; and to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.'
  6. 10When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!'
  7. 13Then Jesus said to the centurion, 'Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.' And his servant was healed that same hour.

Teaching

The centurion did not need a sign — he understood a system. Because he lived under authority, he recognized authority when he saw it.

Jesus marveled twice in the Gospels: once at unbelief, and once at this man's faith. Both times the issue was perception of authority.

Submitted faith is the faith Heaven honors. The man who refuses to submit cannot truly command.

Application

  • 01Examine where you are unwilling to submit. That same place is where your faith is weakest.
  • 02Practice obedience to one delegated authority this week without negotiation.
  • 03Take Jesus at His word in one situation where you have been demanding evidence.

Prayer

Lord, give me the faith of the centurion — a faith born from submission. Teach me to honor delegated authority and to trust Your word without demanding a sign. Speak, and let it be done. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection Questions

  • Q1.What authority in your life are you currently resisting?
  • Q2.Where have you been asking for proof when Jesus has already given a promise?
  • Q3.What would marvel-worthy faith look like in your daily decisions?
